On 13 June, Israel launched pre-emptive airstrikes against Iran’s nuclear program in a major escalation that risks sparking a wider conflict in the Middle East.
The concern is that heightened geopolitical risks in the Middle East are likely to further ratchet up. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has stated that Israel’s operation “will continue for as many days as it takes to remove this threat,” while Iran is reportedly preparing for a retaliatory strike. This could bring the region into a wider conflict and negatively impact the global economy through higher oil prices and other implications. Already, as the price of crude spiked in the aftermath of the attack, we have seen global equities sharply correcting as safe-haven assets like gold rose.
What are the potential outcomes ahead? What will the implications be on the growth outlook and on markets? What are the risks and opportunities for investors?
