Following Powell’s dovish Jackson Hole speech and signs of weakening in the US labour market, the September Fed policy meeting would be closely watched for the resumption of rate cuts after a pause since end-2024. Bets on a 50 basis points cut have started to creep up although a 25 basis points cut remains the markets’ base case.
In response, the S&P 500 index and gold have rallied to another all-time high. However, US dollar and long-term Treasuries have broadly softened given rising doubts about the Fed’s future independence and higher US fiscal deficits.
Will the equities market and gold continue to notch another high following Fed’s September meeting? Would USD and Treasuries trend down further?
