Holding Time Gently

05 August 2025

Holding Time Gently is a multi-channel video installation staged within a composite shophouse. It brings together seven characters across time, from a 1920s painter to a 2050s child archivist, each enacting subtle gestures of affection as time unfolds.

In this artwork, the shophouse is more than a set; it is a metaphor for intergenerational architecture. Characters from different decades coexist across timelines, each performing a personal act of care, memory, or ritual. Their stories unfold side by side, quietly touching yet never colliding. This sense of visual and temporal layering reflects a core tenet of our Asian philosophy: the past lives on in the present and that progress honours its origins.

The immersive medium allows tradition to be expressed through innovation. Digital screens, cinematic pacing, and interactive sound design are woven with heritage textures and analogue gestures such as grinding spices, hand-sewing, or folding clothes. In doing so, the installation becomes a quiet symphony of continuity. It mirrors Bank of Singapore’s role in stewarding legacy while investing in future generations.

Meet the artist and story

As Asia’s Global Private Bank and a trusted advisor to our clients, we understand deeply that family and legacy are the compass shaping decisions and guiding aspirations. Together with local artist Sarah Choo Jing, we present two thoughtful pieces, Holding Time Gently and 60 for 60, which explore the intersection of tradition and modernity, captured in the essence of our shared Asian values.

Both pieces are rooted in the deep conviction that family forms the ethical and emotional foundation for legacy and resilience. They are a complementary pair—one immersive and temporal, the other, contemplative and iconic—exploring memories, a sense of belonging, and emotional intimacy in a layered time capsule.

This project is a poetic celebration of SG60. As we reflect on the rituals that have sustained and brought us joy, we carry a hopeful vision of their continuation, relevant yet renewed, into the next chapter of Singapore’s evolving story.
